Keeping Sandy Hook Elementary School in our thoughts

Pamlico County Primary School extends our deepest sympathy to the staff and families at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  Pictured is a candlelight tribute Pamlico County Primary School held on Tuesday, December 18th during our Christmas program.  Large and small mason jars held candles in memory of the teachers and students who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Book donation to PCPS in memory of Mary Ellen Mann Carroll

We would like to thank the family of Ms. Mary Ellen Mann Carroll, RIF for the generous book donation to Pamlico County Primary School in her memory. These beautiful books are from the RIF Multicultural Collection.  RIF believes that "when children see themselves in the books they read at a young age, they are motivated to read more books and read more often. Books are powerful mirrors and windows for all of us; children need more selections in both these "mirrors" and "windows."  The lists feature high-quality children's books that explore a myriad of cultures."

To see the collection each grade level Kindergarten through 2nd grade received, please click the link below:
                                                      RIF Multicultural Collection

Four sets of 45 beautiful books were donated to PCPS.  Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade levels will share a set and the fourth set will be cataloged for checkout in the Media Center. Each book has carefully thought out plans for Educators and extension activities. Since these books have such powerful messages for our students, we plan to share them often on our morning news show.

1st graders learn about Africa

1st grade students were treated to a special visitor on Friday, October 19th.   Sabra Nethercutt amazed students by telling about the animals she saw while visiting Africa. 1st graders have been learning about Africa and grasslands this week so the visit was a great way to enrich their learning.

Mary Wilkinson teaches Sabra's sister, Laya and arranged the visit after learning Sabra would be home on fall break from college.  Sabra is a senior at Lees-McCrae college in Banner Elk, North Carolina.

Steve Carrier teaches life lessons at PCHS field trip

Aiden Howell was chosen out of the audience to go up on stage and demonstrate holding onto your dreams by being lifted off the ground while holding onto a towel. On Monday, October 8th, students were treated to a field trip to the PCHS auditorium to see Steve Carrier.  This assembly was a fun, energetic, educational program that puts emphasis on: Anti-Bullying, The Six P's of Character: Be: Polite, Productive, Prepared, Prompt, Positive in Attitude, and Participation. Steve encourages students to participate in Random Acts of Kindness, Holding Onto Your Dreams and Never Letting Go. The auditorium has probably never been as loud with students cheering while loud music played, Steve amazed students by tearing a license plate and two phone books in half.  He also broke a baseball bat in half over his knee as well as bending a metal bar into a pretzel.   Once he had the students' attention he shared his message with students about not bullying and how to be successful as a student.  This is one assembly students will not forget.

READ YOUR HEART OUT

Students, staff and parents at PCPS are being asked to commit to READ THEIR HEARTS OUT. Pizza Hut has a program that rewards students who read.  Each month, students are rewarded with certificates that provide a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Students are asked to read or be read to a minimum of 20 minutes per night.  Today staff and students were asked to decorate a heart and sign their name of a heart that shows that they pledge to read their hearts out.  On Thursday, November 1st, PCPS will host a Literacy night during our book fair week.  Parents will be asked to Pledge to read their hearts out to their children by writing their names on a heart.  We want all our students to develop a love of reading!
